How to Stencil
1. When creating a border, mark a guideline around the room with a
chalk pencil or masking tape first.
2. Start in an inconspicuous place, e.g. behind the door.
3. Use low tack masking tape or re-positionable stencil spray to
position the stencil into place.
4. Make sure that you position each stencil correctly into place - some
are designed to integrate within the previous pattern to create a
"flowing" design (see labels).
5. Apply paint SPARINGLY using a stencil brush, air brush or sponge -
practice on paper first. Several thin layers are better than one thick
one. When using a stencil brush blot off excess paint first then brush the
colour into the cut out areas using circular or sweeping strokes.
6. Any type of quick drying paint can be used, including emulsion,
stencil, acrylic, fabric or spray paint. (Always follow the manufacturer’s
instructions).
7. Start with dark shades around the edges and blend in towards the
lighter shades at the centre.
8. You may need to mask sections of the stencil using masking tape to
prevent paint from being applied in the wrong area.
9. Use a clean brush or sponge to apply each new colour after the
previous colour has dried.
10. Wipe off any excess paint from the stencil before using it again.
